The State of SAGE: A Message from the chief!

California Partnership Academy
1. Expenditure report for CPA funding period 2009-11 was due April 30. This was my responsibility, so don't sweat it.
2. CPA year-two funding is available through June 2012, our budget is $72,000. I'll send out an email explaining how we will distribute funding and how to spend it (we need to follow the grant guidelines so teaming up with a cohort teacher will be crucial).
3. CPA Letter of Intent packet for year-three funding (2012-13) is here. This is my job, and I will get it in by the June 30 deadline in order to secure another $72,000. Again, wipe the sweat off of your face, this is my job!

4. OK, so year three will roll out with our E-Car project. Camacho: take it away...you're the man!

Project Based Learning, man!
1. Much seems to be revolving around PBL, good but let's clear the fog.
My 2cents: We are supposed to be developing two projects by grade levels-fall 2011 and spring 2012. It is important that we move as fast as possible because come June it's all over...just thinking about the warm weather somewhere in the Caribbean while holding a margarita is enough...you know what I mean! The Aug PD's are not going to be enough time to plan for both projects. Let's be ready for these days and come in with a plan-our two projects and use this time to sharpen them.
2. There is reasonable uncertainty roaming around the new calendar and how we are going to fit PBL in; new syllabi and pacing plan; PD days design; etc. Let's stay focus and keep it together. How?
9th and 10th grade teams: check out the projects put forth by ACE (Alliance for Climate Education) at
http://www.acespace.org/act-now/action-teams/tracks
These could be tailored to fit a combination of subjects! No need to re-invent the wheel when we can tailor it to our demands...duh!!! Plus, ACE would be willing to work with SAGE!

11th Team: Let's work on and better the water project. This is pretty much done, and all we need to do is update and plan logistics. The H2O project will work better in the Fall, in order to avoid from-scratch planning. We will need to switch the fall project to the spring. Are you with me still?

12th Team:
The ideal project would revolve around our "E-car" that the cohort will be developing. Not all 12th graders will be working on the transformation, but we can design a project so that 12th graders may engage in different aspects of it. There are several places from which to get ideas. We need to do this ourselves. I'm no Deepak Chopra or Walter Mercado, but I can tell you now that the trainers for PDs in August are not going to tell us what to do. They will, most likely, provide the framework. On the other hand, do you (do WE) really want someone to tell us what the project should be? I don't think so! Again, this is our Academy and we should define the projects that will accommodate student and teacher needs, along with strong industry support.

SAGE matters, indeed.
1. The end of the year is upon us (RIFted or not!), and the kids keep chanting in the spirit of Janet Jackson's "What Have You Done for Me Lately" ...district-wide morale is low! -And despite this, we need to do something for the students. I'd like to keep the tradition going by sticking to our plan to end the year with our traditional 3rd Annual SAGE Awards Ceremony. I am shooting for June, after CSTs, by grade level. I will be calling for special lunch meetings for those of you who would be interested in the planning phase, but EVERYBODY will be involved in the nomination and presentation of current talent in all subjects. Don't change the channel yet!

2. If you would like to teach a particular elective, please speak with Ms. Leonido right away so she can pencil you in!
3. ACE (Architecture, Construction, and Engineering) will meet Wed. May 4 in 401-our Drafting room to finalize the end-of-the-year project presentation.
4. Interviews for SAGE principal will be conducted Wed-Thursday between 8AM-12PM. Ms. Emerick, Richard Kent (student), Daisy Garcia (student), Damasio Chavez (parent), and I will represent UTLA, student voice, parent voice, and SAGE, respectively.

Le mita pila (thanks!)
