State of SAGE

1. Administrator-less no more!
Welcome aboard Mr. Mike Hammond, new AP for SAGE!

2. ACE Program…engineers at work!
I am currently working with four students in ACE. We’ve attended two meetings after school: Sept 30 and Oct 7. I will be working with these students all year, but any teacher who wishes to join me will be received with open arms. We have a citywide competition this Saturday (Oct 24)…a fun-filled morning where all students and mentors involved in ACE from all over Los Angeles and Orange County come together to compete in an exciting engineering activity.

3. CPA Grant…the revisions never end!
Since Sept I’ve been revising the budget component to our CPA grant. Turns out that we can only use up to 20% of funds on technology. In the original, I proposed to use a large sum to set up an “Engineering Lab.” The dream is still alive, and I am currently working with Mr. Depew, Camacho, Sy, and Sharon Peoples to attain possible money from Carl Perkins for our lab. I also worked on itemizing the same budget for LD 4 so that is ready for the picking whenever we need the money.

4. Clearing the CTE (Career Technical Education) Pathway
Mr. Depew, Camacho, Sy, and I have been meeting to redefine SAGE’s pathway. The result: 9th Green Construction, 10th Intro to Engineering Design (focus on green techs), 11th Computer Aided Drafting, and 12th Solar/E-Car. We hope to offer at least one section of each by 2010. Each class will last one year and will be taught by Depew, Sy, and Camacho, respectively.

5. Pupusas, Pupusas!
The SAGE and Arts clubs continue to plan and implement on-campus events, this they have designed banners for the Home Coming parade and upcoming events. The SAGE Club was particularly active in recruiting students (just over 100) for our first blood drive of the year. The club has a strong presence in sales at home sporting events. With tasty Salvadoran pupusas who could blame them! Students are yelling THANK YOU Sosa, Carver, and Mendoza!!!

6. SAGE and the Arts
Ms. Emerick, Lewyn, and I took about 80 SAGE students to the Mark Taper Forum Oct 13. Students viewed the Tony Award winning play Parade, which deals with a couple’s search for justice amid religious intolerance, political injustice, and racial tension.

7. More student involvement…this time on the Academic and social end!
Recruitment for Gil Cedillos Young Senator’s and the Safe School Ambassadors programs is done. Thanks to all teachers who became involved and helped in the nomination and application process! Our own Ms. Emerick is running the Ambassador program.

8. What committee R U on?
As previously noted, we had our first meeting this Thursday Oct 15 in my room during the lunch. Committees, please begin to meet to hammer out fun activities and events. Students are already asking about our traditional monthly awards.

9. Get Charter…and I don’t mean cable!
Please join us this Thursday in room 369 at 3:30PM for an open discussion on the charter option. Bring your snack and thoughts!

10. Oh Sacramento here we come!
The CPA New Academy Fall Institute is in November 8-10. The lucky participants will be Depew, Camacho, Sy, Phelps, Curran, and I. Bon voyage!
